Engagement Theory
The engagement theory is the framework that I have decided to use to help me analyse the effectiveness of the digital tools that I will come across during this course. I have decided upon this framework as it emphasises the importance of technology to facilitate all aspects of engagement in learning. It also focuses around collaborative learning and that teams are working towards a common goal (Kearsley & Shneiderman, 2010). When reading the article about engagement theory I thought of the web page that was created in class and how this could be used effectively within a classroom environment. It is a tool which enables students to work along side one another but also enables group members to be adding to their "project" from home, different classrooms, or library. It allows for collaborative learning that does not always need to be face to face communication. The technology in this case would definately be the main aspect for engagment and would also enable students to all contribute by hands on means.

Week 2

Creating a Wiki and a Web Page
Lesson two of managing e-learning and there is no slowing down... This week I created my own wiki page (with some assistance) and I have begun creating a web page. The wiki page was easier for me because I felt more familiar with it... But both the wiki and web page had the tools easily accessible and were simple!! When creating the wiki the class spent time looking at deBono's 6 thinking hats, we spent time inserting pictures and tables I found this simple enough to do. My question would be are wikis an effective resource for a thinking framework that is going to be used by students in a classroom?- I think that it is as it is easily accessible and students are able to actively engage in the thinking process through contributing to the wiki independently.

The website was interesting to use and was a tool that at first I was unsure on how it could be used effectively, after some thought I feel as though the webpage would be a better way for students to independently share their knowldge and understanding of new content or topics they are learning in the classroom.

When using these online resources I was aware there were legal considerations around copying music but I was not aware of the detail and extensive documents around what can and cannot be posted/ or used without permission. I am shocked to realise that everything that is done openly online can be accessed by anyone, anywhere... As a teacher using online resources in a classroom it would be vital to be aware of these regulations and to be cautious when students are using online blogs and websites as learning tools. It is scary to think how vulnerable students and even teachers and adults are when they openly provide personal details sometimes without even realising... Obviously, I still have so much to learn during this course and I am now beginning to understand the importance of e-learning and its practices, not only as a student teacher but also as an Internet user.

Mind maps

At the end of my first managing e-learning tute I have been able to explore bubbl.us an online resource where I was able to create a mind map. When using this resource I was able to add my immediate thoughts on what is managing e-learning. After doing this I then rearranged and added to the mind map. Piagets (1896-1980) theory of constructivism focuses upon the interactions between old and new knowledge or information, and the individual building their understanding through doing this. I feel that mind maps allow for students to visually make these links between new and old understandings. I have discovered that by using an electronic online programe to create the mind map the thought process and organising of ideas is simplified.

The following mind map that I have uploaded shows my first thoughts on what is managing e-learning and my first attempt at using the bubbl.us site. Overtime I hope to build upon these initial ideas. Any comments or suggestions on what I could add to my mind map would be great!!

The Beginning

Week 1. Fuctionality of a blog...

The beginning of a new stage of learning requires new thoughts, questions and experiences. The use of blogs to guide this process is one that is relatively new to me. However, I am trusting that this blog will provide a means of communicating thoughts visually and improving upon my individual understandings through collaborative evaluation. With the assistance of other "bloggers" my learning journey will be supported and guided not only by my own conclusions but also by the thoughts and conclusions drawn by others.

I am excited, yet nervous to further expore the electronics and technologies at my fingertips and at the fingertips of fellow "bloggers".
